Abstract
This article explores the complex relationship between colour and emotion in Bluets by Maggie Nelson. Departing from conventional literary forms, Nelson constructs a fragmented and reflective narrative that blends memoir, philosophy, and poetic prose. The study examines how the persistent recurrence of the colour blue operates as both a symbolic structure and an affective register through which themes of desire, loss, identity, and longing are articulated. Rather than functioning as a mere descriptive element, blue emerges as a dynamic medium that mediates emotional experience and intellectual inquiry. By analysing Nelson’s nuanced engagement with multiple shades and cultural associations of blue, this article argues that colour becomes a site of meaning-making that invites interpretive participation. The research article further situates Maggie Nelson’s Bluets within a broader theoretical framework that understands colour as a universal yet subjective language capable of shaping perception, memory, and emotional response.
